Managing ADD is Like Riding a Bike

Remember when you learned to ride a bike?

You probably started out with a tricycle when you were very young. At some point, you got the coveted two-wheeler with training wheels. And most likely, one day, one of your parents told you that you were ready to take those training wheels off.

Excitement and joy arose when a sunny spring day appeared and you knew it was your time to shine...to be a big kid. And you probably resented the adult who held on to the back of the bike as you started riding.

But when they did eventually let go, what happened?

You fell.

Splat! Right over on your side. You thought you could do it, but it turned out balance on two wheels is a lot different than balance on four. That adult was right.

Maybe you cried. Maybe you skinned a knee or an elbow. Perhaps you found your little self completely disappointed and frustrated about what you thought you could do without effort.

But no matter how you felt, you got up and got back on that bike.

Maybe right away, and maybe a week later. But you got back on the bike. You practiced. You fell many more times, but you kept getting back on.

And now, as an adult, you know how to ride a bike. You may not do it very often, and you may fall every now and then, but you know how to ride a bike.

So what makes you think that managing your ADD is any different than riding a bike?

What makes you think that the minute you set your mind to something, you can accomplish it instantly?

Organization, time management, better focus and concentration, emotional regulation...they all require practice. They all require the willingness to try again in the face of failure.

Managing ADD is like riding a bike. Expect a learning period. Expect quite a few falls. Expect a hard time finding your balance.

And no matter what, always get back on the bike.

Extremely Quick Weight Loss

A diet very low in calories is unlikely to provide adequate nutrition, so it leaves you feeling hungry, deprived and resentful. People have different reactions to this; some rebel, while others are convinced that they don't deserve to eat normally and that they'll never be able to, without gainin weight. In other words, crash diets set the stage for future eating disorders.

Also, very quick weight loss seldom stays off. That's because most people's bodies tend to have two metabolism 'settings', probably left over from those of early humans. When food is plentiful, it is consumed as needed, and the excess is stored in the form of fat. But when food is scarce (like during a restrictive diet) your body is convinced that it's going through a 'famine' time, and metolism slows down to conserve energy. If you're after quick weight loss, that's the last thing that you want, of course. And after you start to eat normally again, your body might still think that it's in a famine and needs to hold on to every bit of energy it can. In fact, some chronic dieters succeed in permanently slowing down their metabolism to the point where they end up gaining more weight than they ever lost in the first place. That's because lost muscle weight can sometimes be replaced by an equal volume of fat.

The real key to quick weight loss, therefore, is not cutting calories but increasing activity so that you burn more of them more quickly. Consider the fact that ballet dancers can lose up to five pounds in a single performance - now that's quick weight loss! Of course, most of us will never be active enough to lose weight that quickly, but certainly a daily workout, long or short, can help get you on the road to quick weight loss. An exercise program coupled with watching what you eat is absolutely optimal in allowing you to lose weight fast. Don't be tempted by gimmicks or pills, though; at best, they are likely to be waste of money, and at worst, they can be downright dangerous.

Deal With Performance Dysfunction

One of the side effects of most medications that cure depression is sexual dysfunction in males. The inability to maintain an erection, or to have an orgasm is a common result of these drugs. It can be frustrating for your boyfriend, and cause more depression. There are a few ways to deal with this, both as the depressed and as the significant other.

When you are the one suffering from the side effect, it can be extremely frustrating to not be able to do things that you were able to do before. It could be considered irony, that a side effect of anti-depressants is the inability to do something enjoyable but there it is. It can be emasculating to no longer be able to perform at will, and it might start to cause you to become more depressed. There are two important things to do in this case. The first is not to allow it to affect your mood too much. The old clich? that it happens to all guys is true, but more importantly, it is not an evaluation of your masculinity. Because you have trouble performing is not the end of the world. In fact, it can be seen as proof that your medication is working.

If you are the significant other, dealing with the problems that arise from this can be frustrating. How do you tell your partner that it is okay, that you are not concerned? It can be difficult, and the words can sound hollow. However, the reassurance can be important. Making it not so big a deal is important. Making sure that your partner knows that you love them for other reasons is crucial. Otherwise, the problems arising from this side effect could become a larger problem than the depression itself.

Prevent Stretch Marks

There are certain circumstances under which stretch marks are almost guaranteed. To be forewarned and not forearmed is therefore foolhardy ? especially considering the near impossibility of getting rid of them later on. Without doubt, pregnancy in women and intentional weight loss in both sexes are the most danger-prone times.

Approximately 80% of all pregnant women can expect to develop at least some stretch marks around the waist, on the stomach, upper thighs, buttocks and breasts. However, stretch marks can also appear after breast augmentation. Whatever the cause for reasonably anticipating stretch marks is, prevention is definitely possible.

Among the main bulwarks against stretch marks in both men and women is a proper diet, which should include an adequate amount of proteins. Foods that contain sufficient vitamins C and E are also absolutely essential. These promote proper tissue regeneration and their intake goes a considerable way in preventing stretch marks.

Adequate and regular consumption of water (a minimum of eight glasses per day) will promote proper hydration of skin tissue, further battling the problem. Smokers should make every possible effort to quit. Apart from their other destructive effects, the contents of cigarette smoke cause skin tissue to lose its inherent elasticity.

The next important prophylactic measure is a regular exercise regimen. Keeping the muscles toned will ensure a ?tight fit? for the skin and will prevent the drastic changes in contour and volume that can lead to stretch marks.

Moisturizing endangered or already stretched skin areas with vitamin E-rich compounds is highly recommended by skin care professionals. This should ideally be supplemented by oil massages to the areas most likely to be affected. The extracts of jojoba, avocado, aloe vera, olive oil and sweet almond have proved to be highly beneficial massage media for preventing stretch marks from developing.

Weight Loss Gastric Bypass

Severe or morbid obesity is a chronic condition that is tough to treat. When exercise and diet alone are not working, then this is when gastrointestinal surgery becomes an option for people who are morbidly obese. People who cannot lose weight traditionally and who suffer weight related medical problems may need to look into surgery. This is not a cure all. If one decides to do any weight loss surgery they need to make life long changes such as eating healthier and exercise.

Candidates for restrictive surgery have a body mass index of 40 or more. This may equal to about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds overweight for women. You will need to have a very clear understanding of the operation, its risks and all the lifestyles changes that you will need to make. A lot of surgeons require that you attend classes and support groups months before you have the surgery. If you have a body mass index between 35 and 39.9 and you have obesity related medical issues like diabetes and heart disease you may take into consideration for surgery.

In your body's normal digestion, the food will pass through the stomach and enter the small intestine. This is where most of the nutrients and calories are absorbed. Basically, in gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon makes the stomach smaller and makes it so food will be allowed to bypass a part of the small intestine. This will make you feel fuller a lot faster by eating smaller meals. When the surgeon bypasses some of the small intestine, it results in fewer calories being absorbed, this in turn leads to weight loss.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most common gastric bypass surgery. This is the most successful gastric bypass surgery in the Untied States. The surgeon will first create a small stomach pouch to restrict the intake of food. A Y-shaped section to the small intestine is created next. It is attached to the pouch to allow food the bypass the lower stomach and the first sections of the small intestine, the duodenum and the jejunum. This will greatly reduce the amount of calories and nutrients being absorbed. So you will have to multivitamins and other mineral to replace the nutrients being lost. You may also have to take more protein as well.

Most of the patients who have this surgery will lose weight quickly and will continue to lose 18 to 24 months after the surgery. Most will maintain their weight loss of 60 to 70 percent of their excess weight for at least ten years.

There are some disadvantages that people need to know about as well. This procedure is more likely to cause long term nutritional deficiencies because of the small intestine bypass. Women who are still in their menstruating years may develop anemia because they may not get the vitamin B12 and iron. Calcium is also not absorbed easily and it may cause osteoporosis and other related bone diseases. Patients must take supplements for the rest of their lives and they need to understand that before the surgery.

After the surgery you should expect a 4-6 day hospital stay. Most of the patients will be able to return to their normal lives in about 3 to 6 weeks.

Michael Russell Your Independent guide to Weight Loss

Many disability and workers compensation insurance payers have used independent medical examinations (IMEs) for years to make payment determinations about disability and workers compensation claims. Yet many payers today are finding that a more effective alternative is to use an independent medical review from an IRO.

Why this shift? An independent medical examination isn?t as objective and unbiased as you might believe. When an IME is performed, the patient has an opportunity to convey their own personal viewpoint on what ails them to the doctor or doctors. Doctors are in the business of being apathetic with their patients and may a patient?s claims at face value without necessarily looking at the medical facts. When a patient says, My back hurts and I can?t stand up straight, the doctor might not substantiate this through an examination. So if the patient does a good job of faking an illness or an ailment, it's very easy for the doctor to concur with what the patient says.

An independent medical review, on the other hand, allows an objective review of the medical chart notes to arrive at a decision based only on the evidence present without being prejudiced by a patient?s comments.

Independent medical reviews are also excellent alternatives to independent medical examinations when disability and workers compensation insurance carriers need to adjudicate claims quickly. When a person files a claim, the carrier is obligated to start paying benefits immediately? but oftentimes it can take several weeks, if not months, to arrange for an independent medical examinations. An independent medical review can be sent out immediately and turned around in a matter of three to seven business days instead of the three to four weeks it takes to schedule an independent medical exam. The speed of independent medical reviews means that the insurance payer can save weeks and weeks of not paying premiums if a patient is not eligible for coverage on the basis of medical necessity.

So, an independent medical review can help adjudicate claims more quickly and cost effectively, as well as save the disability and workers comp carrier significant premiums for falsified claims. That?s why it makes sense for disability and workers comp carriers and payers to use an independent medical review as an alternative to IMEs.

Sugar America's Drug of Choice

Many people use sugar as medicine. Sugar tends to change the way our metabolism uses specific amino acids to make the neurotransmitters needed for proper brain function. Eating refined carbohydrates increase the level of the amino acid tryptophan, which helps to create the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is the calming neurotransmitter. So when we need to relax we will crave sugar so that we can create more serotonin. This is one of the main reasons sugar is so addictive.

Refined sugars are added to many foods to improve the taste. Sugar consumption has increase dramatically since the 1950?s. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated in 1993 that the average American ate 130 pounds of sugar per year, in 1998 it went to 147 pounds of sugar, and now this number is around 170 pounds of sugar per year. This includes whole sugar and many forms of processed sugars, including high fructose corn syrup. If you are tired all the time, look at your level of sugar consumption and foods that turn to sugar quickly in your system.

Sugars and other sweeteners are used in most processed foods today. Sugar can be hidden as many different names such as sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin, maltose, lactose, and high fructose corn syrup. All of these are names of refined sugars. If a food you are buying has any of these names on the label as the first ingredient, or a combination of them as one of the first four ingredients, do not buy it! It will cause blood sugar imbalances over time, and affect your immune system.

High fructose corn syrup was developed in 1966 as a sweetener to blend into processed foods. It is made from cornstarch and turns into fructose and glucose. This type of processed fructose is metabolized differently than glucose and can contribute to high triglycerides and insulin resistance. Fructose found in whole fruits does not have the adverse affect of processed fructose, and should not contribute to higher blood fats. But we are getting more processed fructose as an additive in foods. The consumption of high fructose corn syrup increased to an average of 62.6 pounds per person in 2001.

Our body, especially our brain, uses glucose for energy. Glucose is found in fruits and vegetables, and is used in the metabolism of all plants and animals. Yet, overuse of sugar, especially processed sugars in adults and children causes the adrenals to work harder, putting out more adrenaline than is necessary. With excess adrenaline there is a feeling of constant stress and anxiety in adults. In children it is seen as hyperactivity, concentration difficulties, and irritability. Concentration is affected because brain wave activity increases and focusing on one subject becomes more difficult. Over time, when the brain cells have been stressed too long, symptoms of depression will begin to occur. At this stage the whole system becomes overwhelmed, causing symptoms of fatigue and indifference, signaling that we need a rest. If depression is caused by excess refined sugar intake, no matter what medication is taken, the symptoms will not be alleviated properly.

Eating sugar is worse than eating nothing. Do not eat sugar-based foods just to try to get food into your system. Soft drinks are one of the worst drinks to consume on a regular basis. The average can of soda pop contains eight to nine teaspoons of sugar. This amount of sugar that is usually consumed in a very short period of time creates havoc with sugar metabolism in the liver. In response, the body must mobilize large amounts of adrenalin and insulin to clear the sugar from the bloodstream. Fruit juices are not much better. Juices contain about the same amount of sugar as soft drinks. They are basically sugar water with very few nutrients. Drinking juices or soft drinks regularly can lead to significant health problems as well as blood sugar disorders.

Recent studies show that 30% of our foods are basically high sugar, high carbohydrate junk foods, and children are some of the worst offenders. Too much sugar does affect our brain function. B-complex vitamins are used to process glutamic acid, which is needed by the brain. B-complex vitamins are used to metabolize excessive sugars. If you get sleepy after eating, or cannot think clearly, look at the level of processed sugars in your meals, especially the hidden ones, to see what may be causing these problems to occur. Avoiding processed sugars in our diet can prevent many potential chronic health issues.

The human body has two different sets of nerves: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic system. The somatic nervous system is the system of voluntary nerves that is responsible for giving us sensation and control of our muscles, which help us to move the different portions of our body. On other hand, the autonomic nervous system is the involuntary nervous system. Our numerous body functions occur without conscious control like speed of breathing, beating of heart and production of sweat. The sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems are two components of the autonomic nervous system. The job of the sympathetic nervous system is to control the sweating throughout our bodies.

Have you heard the news about a relationship between obesity and cancer death rate? You should know that researchers evaluate that as many as 90,000 cancer deaths in the United States each year may be linked to obesity and, therefore, could be prevented.

Obesity and overweight may make it harder to diagnose prostate cancer, resulting to delayed diagnosis and leading some men at an even higher risk for dying of this disease. This is the conclusion of a recent multi-university study. As a consequence, the study authors are recommending that physicians be especially thorough when investigating fat men for prostate cancer.

According to the study findings, up to a level, prostate gland size grows as body mass index (BMI) increases. BMI is a body fatness evaluation formula based on weight adjusted for height. Due of larger prostate glands existed among obese men, doctors may be 20 percent to 25 percent less able to diagnose prostate cancer.

Most people don't think that obese or overweight condition is a risk factor for cancer. Usually, the prostate cancer diagnose is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack Going back to obese condition, the bigger the haystack is, the harder it is to find the needle. Therefore in many obese patients physicians may not identify prostate cancers at the right time.

The Hoodia Facts

Hoodia facts: The hoodia gordonii is only one species of hoodia plant that grows in areas of southern Africa. The hoodia gordonii species is the only species of hoodia that is believed to contain a natural appetite suppressant. A good hoodia reference for those interested in learning more about historical uses of hoodia plants, as well as the distribution of different hoodia species throughout Africa, including countries with wild stands of hoodia gordonii plantzafrica.com. This site lists known hoodia facts, permitting policies for cultivation and sites to visit for further information.

Hoodia facts: The research cited by many health supplement companies concerning how hoodia works to suppress the appetite was performed by D.B. MacLean and L.G. Luo at the Division of Endocrinology of Brown Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island. This research was performed on laboratory rats and involved injecting the purified p57 molecule obtained from the hoodia gordonii plant directly into the brains of the rats. This research is largely used as hoodia reference material. The complete abstract can be viewed at PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

Hoodia facts: Many hoodia reference materials state that the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research began studying hoodia gordonii in the 1960?s, but the exact date has been hard to find. Most sources agree that sometime in 1995 or 1996, the active molecule in hoodia gordonii was isolated and identified. National Geographic did a complete story about the possible economic success that a poor society in southern Africa known as the San or Bushmen could achieve if all went well with the development of the molecule. The article titled ?Africa?s Bushmen May Get Rich from Diet-Drug Secret? and appearing in the April 2003 issue of National Geographic News provides interesting hoodia facts and a snapshot into the lives of these ancient people.

Hoodia facts: All of the known hoodia gordonii clinical research has been performed by a company called Phytopharm or its partners. There have been informal clinical observations by American doctors, but all hoodia reference initially comes from Phytopharm. Phytopharm is currently partnered with Unilever, makers of Slim Fast and other food products, and announced in April of 2006 that they were moving on to the second phase of a five phase clinical research program into hoodia gordonii?s use as an appetite suppressant. Clinical research is research that involves human volunteers rather than laboratory animals. Phytopharm?s website provides answers to frequently asked questions about hoodia gordonii and their main website publishes past and present press releases. This is a good hoodia reference source for those interested in hoodia history.

Hoodia facts: The benefit of hoodia gordonii is that it is believed to suppress appetite (see CSIR, Phytopharm and MacLean studies). There is some evidence that it may increase metabolism (see Phytopharm and MacLean study). The acceptable dosage of hoodia gordonii to achieve desired results is unknown at this time. It is not known how manufacturers of supplements arrive at their recommendations. Some have based recommendations on the amount of the raw plant that one needs to eat to suppress the appetite. There is no hoodia reference guide for dosages and knowledge of hoodia facts is so limited that some professionals do not recommend hoodia gordonii for anyone. All reputable supplement companies recommend that dieters check with their own doctors before they begin to take hoodia gordonii.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) assists the body in the production of collagen, a basic component of connective tissues. Collagen is an important structural element in blood vessel walls, gums, and bones, making it particularly important to those recovering from wounds and surgery.

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, scavenging potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. Although not firmly established by clinical trials, this antioxidant capacity may help boost immune function, protect against cancer, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration of the retina, and other chronic diseases. Vitamin C intake may be particularly helpful to smokers, as they are more likely to suffer from oxidative stress and cell damage that can deplete vitamin C.

Vitamin C ester

Vitamin C ester (Ascorbyl palmitate) has been added to a number of skin creams due to interest in its antioxidant properties as well as the important role of vitamin C in collagen synthesis. Vitamin C Ester is fat-soluble and as such rapidly penetrates the skin.

The increased absorption of vitamin c ester has actually been measured by scientists at Proctor & Gamble. They were able to show that vitamin C ester is absorbed much more quickly and achieves levels ten times higher in the skin than Asorbic Acid.

Tim Shellon is a contributor to VitaminCDoctor.com You can find out more information on the reasons why you should be taking vitamin C ester and absorbic acid more seriously.

Total Fitness And Diet Program

The first thing I want you to do is forget everything you ever heard about eating and exercise, forget all about eating 6 meals a day and exercise several hours week in and week out!! And forget all that you ever have heard about fat, carbohydrate and protein, because with this no diet, diet you can eat everything you want, yes, you heard me right, everything!!!

I will not go into details here on how this diet is working, but here are some major things you have to know:

The human body is not designed to eat 6 meals a day, not at all!!

When man was a hunter (50.000 years ago) he hunted all day long, eating nothing but what he could find - nuts, raw fruits and berries - and at the end of the day when they finally caught an animal, they ate and they ate big time!! What happened next? They ate some more and went to sleep - end of the day. Same thing next day, and so on and so on.... There was absolutely NO obesity at that time - none!!

It's all about under eating during the daytime and over eating during late evening!!

Here is what happens when you under eat during the daytime: the body will detox and get rid of all waste products, your growth hormone production will raise, your body will turn on a fat burning mechanism (high metabolism) and your immune system will work optimally. When the night comes, you can put almost everything you want in your mouth - your body can handle almost everything at that time, and your metabolism will go even higher when you start to eat - so eat!! Read carefully here, because here is what I want you to do:

Read this article one more time, go and think about it for the rest of the day, and tomorrow you take ACTION!!

Tomorrow you go to the grocery store and buy fruit and nuts of all kinds, and the whole day long you can nibble on those. Remember to drink water as well - you can drink what you want during the day - everything without sugar. In the evening from 6 to 9 you just go ahead and eat whatever you want, and I really mean whatever you want - your body can handle it and you will not get fat from eating during those 3 hours - no way! When you finish eating you will be very sleepy and that's normal, it is a hormonal response when you eat a lot, and that's fine because you are about to go to sleep.

Remember no more food after 9 in the evening!!

That's it and the next day you do exactly the same thing over again!

I promise you that you will feel a difference the very first day and you WILL see results after the first week! In the daytime you will be full of energy and after the 3 hours of overeating at night, you will be very sleepy!

Now the exercise part.

It is so easy but yet so effective that you won't believe it! What I want you to do is at least 3 times a week one hour before your overeating phase at night begins, you should lay flat on your back, have your eye on a clock, and then do the cycle you know, where you put your hands together behind your head and turn the left elbow to your right knee and then the right elbow to the left knee - but pay attention here: Do it as fast as you can for 20 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds (no more than 10 seconds) and you do this for four minutes only! I am telling you, this IS painful but it is SO effective, and it is the only exercise you will ever need to lose your body fat.

You can do the exercise more often, if you want to - alternatively you do it in the morning as well..

Remember your body is fantastic - it will get used to only having food once a day and it will happen quickly, so in a matter of days you wont feel hunger during the daytime!

Okay, that's it! Just follow the steps above and you will have you dream-body in no time.

Go for it!

(Never embark on any diet or exercise regime without first consulting a health care professional.)

FoodCombining Diets

Books and programs on food combining have been on and off the best-seller lists for years. They should be in the fiction section. The authors claim that eating protein and carbohydrates, or fat and carbohydrates together causes problems because they require different enzymes for digestion, and either acid or alkaline conditions. They give you elaborate lists of foods that you can or cannot eat at the same meal. If any of this were true, the human race would be extinct. Few foods are pure protein, carbohydrate or fat. Your digestive system has evolved to deal with mixed foods, and the enzymes secreted by your pancreas can digest them all in any combination.

Your stomach is strongly acidic, no matter what food you eat. Stomach acid is much stronger than lemon juice, tomatoes or any other acid food. Nothing you eat escapes this acid soup while it is in your stomach, so it makes no difference whether you combine acid and alkaline foods.

These authors tell you that the undigested food will ferment and putrify, causing you to accumulate toxins in your intestines. This just doesn't happen. Your intestines do a very efficient job of breaking down carbohydrates, fats and proteins into their building blocks, which are then absorbed into your bloodstream. As long as you are not constantly constipated, your colon does an excellent job of removing the waste products of digestion. If you have a problem with constipation, the answer lies not which foods you combine, but in adding fiber and water to your diet.

They even claim that the undigested food makes you fat, which is impossible. To be stored as fat, a food must be broken down into its building blocks and pass from the intestines into the bloodstream. Any undigested food would be excreted, making you thinner, not fatter.

People who lose weight following these nonsensical rules do so simply because they are forced to limit their food choices and therefore consume fewer calories.

Do not confuse these ridiculous diets with serious combination recommendations that are made in two special situations:

Diabetics and others who are concerned about sharp rises in blood sugar are advised to eat fruits and root vegetables only in combination with other foods. Fruits and root vegetables contain lots of sugar or quickly digested starches which can cause blood sugar to rise after eating. However, a healthy diet does not eliminate these foods because they also contain lots of vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals that your body uses to keep you healthy and prevent diseases. When you eat these foods WITH other foods, particularly proteins or fats, they are digested more slowly. Diabetics should include a variety of fruits and root vegetables in their diet, but eat them with meals, not alone.

Strict Vegetarians who eat no animal products are often advised to COMBINE beans and grains so they will get complete proteins. This is true, but you do not need to eat the foods together at the same meal. The proteins found in meat and dairy products contain all nine essential amino acids (the ones your body needs and cannot make), and so they are called complete proteins. Most plant sources of protein, such as beans and grains, contain only two to seven of the essential amino acids, so you must eat a variety of these foods to assure that you get them all. However, you can do this over the course of the day or week. Amino acids circulate constantly in your bloodstream and are used as needed. You do not need to eat the foods simultaneously to supply your body with the different amino acids you need.

How to Become the Type of Dieter Who Succeeds

Are you the kind of dieter who starts full of enthusiasm embracing a new plan on day one yet falling by the wayside a few weeks or months later?

Or are you a dabbler - someone who tries a bit of this plan a bit of that and never really gets anywhere?

Or are you someone who gets to your target weight, more or less keeping to your diet, and then ditches it with glee only to put all the weight back on again?

It doesn't matter what type of dieter you have been in the past, you can be successful from now on, but you will need a change in approach. After all, if the ways you've tried to lose weight and keep it off in previous attempts haven't worked for you, chances are they never will.

How do the people who succeed at losing weight actually do it?

Among my coaching clients I have established four factors that make a huge difference (and you don't even need a coach to put them in place). You become the type of dieter who loses weight permanently by:-

  • making your mind up to succeed no matter what
  • being ready to change your habits for the long term not just to meet your target weight
  • having a simple plan to follow that fits in with your lifestyle and preferences
  • arranging support by having the right routines and structure in place and having someone who you know will be there for you when the going gets tough

With these four elements in place the effort of losing weight is easier than you might imagine. For example, if you are absolutely determined to succeed you don't find it so difficult to choose healthy food options and to fit more movement into your life even if you don't want to take formal exercise. If you are happy to change your habits for life, you avoid the problem of losing weight and then putting it all straight back on when you go back to eating what made you overweight in the first place. If you have a simple plan, you don't get bored with counting and calculating, measuring and weighing food - you make changes which are easier to maintain. And getting support - from family, from friends, from the routines and structure you put in place, simply makes things go more easily, whatever system you're following.

Think about which of these elements are missing in the way you are going about losing weight. What do you need to change to become the type of dieter who reaches and maintains his or her target weight and stays there? Increase your chances of success by making sure these elements are present in your next weight loss program whatever way you choose to lose weight.

How To Quit Smoking

Smoking has been linked to many health conditions, such as Lung Disease and Emphysema, both of which are often lethal, and thus many people have been trying for years to quit smoking. However, quitting is easier said than done as cigarettes have an ingredient known as nicotine, which makes smoking addictive and thus very difficult to quit.

Now, some people are able to stop smoking under their own power; however, thousands of others have suffered with their smoking problems for years and it is killing them slowly. It can be easier to quit smoking if you get some prescribed medication from your doctor which is used to help people overcome their addiction to nicotine, or use one of the many consumer products such as the Nicotine patch or Nicotine gum to help stop smoking. The bottom line is, if you are serious about quiting, there are lots of options out there.

Smoking is a very difficult habit to overcome, and for those who cannot quit by means of their own will power, it is recommended that they seek medical help to help stop smoking and overcome their addiction. Smoking is very dangerous and thus it is recommended that smokers begin the quitting processes quickly so that serious diseases do not have a chance to develop.

Recommended Treatments for Arthritis

Fortunately there are a number of ways to treat and manage arthritic pain. There are arthritic diets, exercise programs, over-the-counter and prescription medications, relaxation and positive emotion coping techniques. In addition to surgeries, supplements, numerous home remedies, and other alternative therapies.

ARTHRITIC DIETS & NUTRITIONAL HEALING

Doctors have known for a long time that diet a specific type of arthritic condition, gout, however what is unclear are the affects on other common types of arthritis such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.

While it is well known that dietary health is important and that being overweight can affect certain arthritic conditions, forcing joints to carry more of a load. This causes the overuse of some of your joints, especially the knees. So making sure arthritic sufferers eat god foods and get help from healthcare providers to create and follow a well-balanced dietary plan is advised.

HERBAL & OTHER NATURAL & HOME REMEDIES & SUPPLEMENTS

People have often tried traditional medications without success, and as a result seek relief through natural remedies. Also the increasing cost of prescription medication encourages many to look into alternatives as well..

A popular alternative treatment is acupuncture. Although the pain-relieving effects may be temporary, these sessions can be very beneficial for those who find that drugs or supplements are insufficient or have unacceptable side effects

Another treatment option is cayenne cream. Cayenne peppers contain an substance called capsaicin which is responsible for their spicy effect. This also causes a burning sensation when it comes in contact with skin, and inhibits the body's production of substance P which is heavily involved the relaying signals of pain to the brain. Apply the cream two to three times per day for at least one week before making a decision as to whether or not the cream is helping to reduce arthritis pain.

Many other natural remedies and supplements have been found to actually reduce cartilage deterioration and even rebuild a patient's lost cartilage. Be sure that before adding any to your list you talk with your healthcare advisor, as supplements can cause adverse reactions and may not be right for your situation. While some supplements may be fine for arthritic patients; some may not be.

The most well known and popular supplement are chondroitin, fish oil and glucosamine. Chondroitin draws fluid into the cartilage, improving shock-absorbing ability and weight control, as more weight equals more joint pressure. Fish oils help with controlling inflammation in the body. And recent studies have shown that the cartilage-building substance called glucosamine is effective for the long-term relief of osteoarthritis pain. In some people, glucosamine appears to even slow the deterioration of joints over time and reinforce joint cartilage. Whether or not it can actually reverse the disease is still unclear.

Ohers include:

? Ginger ? Ginger is an antioxidant that acts as an inflammatory with no major side effects.

? Glucosamine sulfate ? This builds cartilage with very few side effects.

? Magnets ? Although magnets that are worn as jewelry or placed on bed linens have been reported by some to be effective pain relievers, results are still preliminary; doctors claim that these magnets are not strong enough.

? MSM - This organic sulfur is used in the reduction of inflammation.

? Nettle leaf - Nettles can reduce a patient's need for NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) by up to 70 percent.

? Vitamin E ? This antioxidant is used primarily for osteoarthritis.

? Vitamin B is also an effective pain reliever. It works best on the knee and can help stop degeneration that is caused by free-radical molecules, not only in the joints but in other areas of the body as well

Additionally over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, can be very helpful in decreasing joint pain, but they do produce side effects and can cause problems

EXERCISES FOR ALL LEVELS

Exercise can be very beneficial for arthritis sufferers, often relieving stiffness in joints, strengthening muscles thereby reducing stress on joints, keeping bone and cartilage tissue strong and healthy, and increasing flexibility. A recommended 30-minute minimum of daily activity is the norm.

Exercises that work on your range of motion, such as dance or low-impact aerobics. These can relieve stiffness and increase flexibility. Also don't forget about walking as an exercise. Walking is a great exercise that improves the arthritic condition, and carrying weights as light as one pound and using your arms as you walk can involve the whole body.

Water is an excellent aid because it provides resistance that builds muscle in the entire body while reducing shock to the joints at the same time. As the whole body tends to become involved in aquatic exercise you have the added benefit of cardiovascular exercise. Find a heated pool to work out in since warm water is soothing helps the joints and increases your blood circulation.

Another form of treatment is yoga is and pose-oriented exercises. The forms of yoga are extremely beneficial toward achieving flexibility and relaxation. Check your local activities paper or section of your local paper to see if there are any yoga classes near you.

Whatever exercise program you choose, be sure to breath properly. Breathing is important to any exercise regimen as it promotes a healthy heart rate and reduces fatigue; additionally breathing and oxygenation helps circulation, which is vital to achieving the flexibility and strength that you are trying to achieve in fighting your arthritis. Also, listen to your body.

MEDICATIONS & OTCS (OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDS)

The most common OTC nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin. Use the right way, these drugs can help with pain relief, inflammation and fever reduction, and blood clot prevention. However, the misuse of some of these can cause blockage of an enzyme in the body that aids in the protection of the stomach lining and other areas.

Acetaminophen is the name of the active ingredient found in several well-known brand-name products; some Excedrin? products, Tylenol?, and Aspirin Free Anacin?. Although it does not help with arthritic inflammation and swelling, it can help with pain relief in mild cases. Use caution with dosages, however. Excess usage poses risk of liver damage, even death, especially for active drinkers (of alcoholic beverages).

Several years ago, a very interesting new idea with regard to weight loss became all the rage: eating for your blood type. This concept answered the age-old question of why not all eating plans work for all people. That much seems undeniable ? people are very different with regard to the types of food that works for them, as well as the type of exercise program. A weight loss regime that works for one person won?t necessarily work for someone else ? that much we know.

Some experts started to link this to blood type. There are four main blood types, and according to this way of thinking, each type represents a body type. If you eat the food that is right for your type, you will lose weight effortlessly. Conversely, most weight problems are the result of eating the food that?s wrong for your type. As well, there are types of exercise that are suitable for some types and not for others.

Though mainstream science ridiculed this idea, thousands of people followed the eating plan for their blood type and many had excellent results. This is the theory: the different blood types evolved at different times in human history, and even nowadays people with those types have traits that are specific to humans at that stage of evolution. This may sound confusing, but it?s clearer with an example: According to this theory, ?o? type blood, because it?s the simplest type, evolved first. At that time in human history, people had not yet developed agriculture. They were primarily hunters, and ate meat and greens; they ate no wheat, and no dairy, because those foods developed later on with the advent of farming. Humans at that time in history also exercised vigorously.

So, if you have ?o? type blood, your body is similar to this early human physiology. If you eat a lot of carbohydrates and don?t exercise vigorously, you will have weight problems and other health problems, because you are not eating and exercising in the way that is right for your blood type and body type. To lose weight and be healthy, if have ?o? type blood, you have to eat plenty of red meat and vegetables, and very little wheat or dairy. You should also have a strenuous physical activity, like running or weight lifting, that you practice several times a week.

But if you are a type ?a? or ?b?, for example, that advice would be all wrong for you. These types developed somewhat later, after agriculture was established, so these individuals can and should eat more fruits, vegetables, and grains. People with ?ab? type blood are lucky; their type evolved last, after humans had incorporated all types of food into their diet. So ?ab?s can basically eat anything ? within reason ? and not gain weight.

Over the past six or seven years, many people have followed this plan and lost a lot of weight. There are a few problems with it, though. First of all, as mentioned before, there is no hard scientific evidence that shows that people with different blood types are physiologically different. It?s an appealing idea, but it can?t be proven as yet. Also, some of the blood type diets (particularly the diet for type ?o?) are very restrictive. In fact, the type ?o? diet is rather like Atkins at its most restrictive, and some nutritionists feel that this might lead to problems with high cholesterol in the long run. On the other hand, proponents of the diet argue that type ?o? people are precisely those who can afford to eat a lot of meat without negatively affecting their cholesterol level. If someone with a different blood type ate in this way, it might be a problem, but not for ?o?s?. And it is certainly true that some people develop or don?t develop cholesterol problems seemingly regardless to their dietary intake.

If the theory has no basis, though, how would we explain the weight loss that so many people have experienced? It may be simpler than you think, actually. Any one of the four blood type eating plans, if followed correctly, would have you eating healthier, more natural food. Some, like the ?o? diet, are also quite restrictive. It seems likely that these diets make you lose weight in and of themselves, regardless of what blood type you are!

Shaving

Shaving is the most common method of removing pubic hair. That?s probably because it?s cheap and you can do it yourself at home. Most women use a razor and if you decide to do the same, remember to use a safety razor designed for bikini line hair removal. Electric razors are more expensive but less hassle to use and a little safer.

Many women find shaving a quick and convenient short-term method of bikini line hair removal but frequent pubic hair shaving can be a pain. Side effects can include razor bumps and other skin irritations and stubble growth between shaves can lead to itching and ingrown hairs.

Bikini Wax

If you want a longer-term solution than shaving, a bikini wax is an option. As hair is pulled out from the roots, it won?t grow back for four to six weeks. Not surprisingly, the treatment can be painful, and many women are reluctant to use this method of pubic hair removal for this reason. It?s worth remembering though that the pain should be less with every treatment.

Epilators

Epilators are electric devices that when applied to the skin pull hair out by the roots. Hair may not return for up to four weeks so they can be quite a good long-term method of pubic hair removal. They used to be painful to use but current products are reportedly less so as they numb the skin as they work. Very short hairs can be removed too so stubble and ingrown hairs are less of a problem.

Depilatory lotions

Depilatory lotions can take as little as ten minutes to dissolve hair. Some are designed for bikini line hair removal but you should use them with caution. Never use them on the pubic area other than along the bikini line as the chemicals can burn the skin or cause allergic reactions. Always carry out a skin test on your elbow before using a depilatory cream. Don?t use products designed for removing hair on the face: the pubic area is more sensitive.

Hoodia Gordoni Diet Pills (Really "Hoodia Gordonii")

As of last month, detailed searches for Hoodia Gordoni diet pills still provide evidence that at least 9,000 interested weight loss candidates still don?t know exactly what this botanical really comprises. And, it?s no wonder, as the name implies very little and gives hardly any clues as to what, how, where, when, and why pure Hoodia Gordonii maintains and proliferates its popularity. People mistakenly write Hoodia Gordonii as ?Hoodia Gordoni.?

Nonetheless, the ultimate, ongoing search for a natural yet solid body fat weight loss solution stimulates Hoodia diet pill hype. Manufacturers (even less than scrupulous ones) perpetuate this hype to maximize sales revenue. This is no crime. However, shouldn?t the REAL emphasis lie in providing overweight or potentially obese individuals with bona fide and efficient nutritional supplement assistance?

Numerous unanswered search engine queries for ?how to lose body fat? or ?how to eat to lose weight? and ?exercises to get a better body quickly? surely imply that countless body fat candidates? needs remain unmet. And it's a shame, too. Actually, upon examining the limited research and positive user feedback on Hoodia Gordoni diet pills, there appears to be somewhat solid support for progressive and safe weight loss without complications or negative side effects.

Yet, regardless of whether you discover and utilize Hoodia Gordonii or any other weight loss diet pill or supplement, for that matter, one unchanging body fat fundamental remains... you have to understand the mechanics of weight loss from the inside out, AND develop a mindset for adherence to and continuance of your diet, exercise, emotional, intellectual, and motivational powers.

Hoodia Gordoni diet pills can help you lose body fat, but they work emphatically better when you incorporate endorsed exercise science or weight management concepts and principles.

That said, here?s how Hoodia diet pills work ? pure Hoodia Gordonii uses the molecule P57 to perpetuate the perception of fullness from your brain?s hypothalamus (the hormonal signaling thought center). Thus, believing in a very ?natural? way that you are already satisfied with your food or drink intake, your daily lifestyle can proceed without the additional calories of needless foods that individuals normally eat.

Would you like to experience better body fat or weight loss results than you are currently achieving? Okay, the first thing you must do is reach a negative calorie deficit each and every day. Ideally, this deficit should total about ?500 calories. You can use Hoodia Gordoni diet pills to help you in this way ? by eating three to six evenly spaced, nutritionally balanced, (that is, nutrient-rich, not junk-rich) meals per day.

With pure Hoodia Gordonii as your preferred or selected appetite suppressant assistant, the smaller meals you are now eating won?t seem like ?work? or too much of a ?chore? for you to perform. Thus, your enjoyment of the weight loss process can remain at its optimum level. This enables you to continue losing weight and getting used to the idea and feeling of eating smaller amounts of food gradually as time progresses.

Weight loss becomes even easier and more results-generative when you mix really good eating habits with consistent physical activity. Further, if you can convince your mind to cause your body to engage in threshold-reaching action (that is, usually a level much more challenging than you are probably currently accustomed to) you can effectively burn up to 10 or more calories of body fat per minute. This can happen with or without Hoodia Gordoni diet pills. Yet, a beginner may experience more initial fat-burn progress with proper supplement usage. The beginning is almost always the hardest part of the slimming-down process when you are already overweight.

Proper usage of pure Hoodia Gordoni diet pills thus far reports no negative side effects. Practically everyone knows that it literally takes years to develop research materials on new nutritional products. Therefore, actual research data remains scarce at this time because it is a relatively new weight loss and appetite suppressant supplement.

With the growing surge of interest in Hoodia Gordonii, numerous suppliers have emerged, many of whom attempt to emulate the original formula, as well as settle for duplications that lack authenticity or efficacy. So, as always, let the buyer beware, as the saying goes, when and if you decide to purchase this appetite suppressant weight loss supplement.

FYI, Davis Biotech is one of the first companies to pioneer the genuine South African Hoodia Gordonii cactus supplement, introducing it into the United States. The firm is still in operation, with a solid performance record. Research almost always pays off in the long run, and you may benefit from reading more about Hoodia Gordoni diet pills (spelled ?Hoodia Gordonii?) as you move forward with your weight loss goals.

Food Is My Friend

I began to discover food as the source of life at the age of 12. It was a love/ hate relationship. I hated to eat because I was afraid of becoming fat and yet I had to eat because if I didn?t I would get dizzy and get into fights with those who supposedly cared about me.

This struggle continued from the age of 12 until the age of 32.

I decided that the only way to get over it was to do more. I would show everyone that I was strong and that I could do anything. As I continued to do great things for others, I felt good but then that good feeling went away and I was miserable and alone. I had to decide ?do I eat or not eat??

When I didn?t eat I felt lighter but I also got dizzy and felt out of it. When I ate -I picked at my food and ended up eating junk later and slept it off. I never knew who was really my friend because there were so many people who treated me badly, teased me, I felt as though my life was a joke.

There were points when I decided that I could kick this -I was determined. I realized how miserable I was and decided that I had to do something to change that -so I discovered that when I did new and adventurous things I got my excitement and life back. After a while though, the misery came back so I found somewhere else to go.

There were many times when I seriously thought I was going crazy. There were times when my friends thought I was suicidal. I decided that it was not safe to share feelings with others because I will get into trouble if I did.

When I sought help I was told that I was ?perfect?, that it was ?all in my head? or that everyone goes through that. Just eat from all the food groups.

Finally at the age of 31 I was living alone -what a blessing -no one to watch over me, I could do what I wanted. This time I would be fine -I promised myself. Yet, after overeating and bingeing on a box of little Debbie?s and ice cream or a half a box of cereal I would run to the cupboard for laxatives. I would pray -Dear God, if you get me through this I promise I will never to do it again. How many times did I break that promise?

My ways of gaining control were not working. I would buy entire bags of binge foods, take them home and throw them away. I would attempt to make myself throw up and yet I couldn?t. There are so many others that can do this better. I am such a wuss.

If people really knew how much pain I was in they would freak out. That is one of the main reasons I could never go through with killing myself. I was afraid of what other people would think of me. Then on the other hand I would think about everything I wanted to do in my life. And the fact that I am so afraid of dying, death and life. Life would be so much better with out food and feelings and having friends because then they wouldn?t worry about me and I wouldn?t feel guilty about letting them down. There was no escape now -isolated in my living room dreading my life. I had to do something ?

Mary Pat got the help she needed and continues her journey of recovery, one day at a time. She wants to use her life to help others find theirs. Remember - You are not alone. http://www.reflectingrace.com

It certainly does not appeal to every body as all obese patients are not ardent milk drinkers. But those who can manage to gulp down three glasses of low fat milk every day have a new weight loss plan in hand, The Diary Diet Plan.

Recent research on the importance of calcium in the form of milk in weight reduction has given health experts a new dimension to work on. Are we already seeing novel ways which will help fight the dangerous disorder namely obesity? A very interesting research has been conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee to study the role of diary foods in weight loss among a group of 32 obese adults over 24 weeks. There were three groups of participants, the first group had a low calcium low diary eating plan, the second group consisted of participants who followed a high calcium supplement coupled with a low diary plan and the last group had individuals who were on a high diary eating plan.

Each group was given the essential diet facilities like consultations with dieticians, diet procedures and there were doctors to answer queries on this diet diary procedure. Results after a short study indicated positive effects on the use of diary products as it led to rapid weight loss. Though there are a lot of clinical studies which should follow the research analysis, the new theory has caught attention among many eminent researchers.

In short, diary diet therapy has been tested effective for weight loss treatment. But the extend of its weight loss magnitude has to be thoroughly studied before it is been made open to obesity treatment. With fast weight loss methods like diet pills [Phentermine, Bontril, Didrex a new addition in the form of diary products can be an added advantage. Patients can use the pills and follow the diary diet if it?s been proved successful.

With competing medications in the drug market, a natural weight loss phenomenon with no side effects as such can interest many a curious weight watchers. Although it cannot be used as the one stop treatment for obesity, as explained earlier diary therapy can follow any diet plan and guide a speedy weight loss. As studies go further, all of us including the doctors who are eager to find a cure for obesity patiently await a proper diet treatment to kill it.

Soybeans: Too Much of a Good Thing?

The soybean industry has generated so much publicity on the health benefits of soybeans that some people eat soy products at every meal. That's a mistake, because too much of anything can be harmful.

Virtually all plants contain some chemicals that make us healthy and some chemicals that can harm us. Fortunately for us, our ancestors picked out plants that contain more good chemicals and therefore are healthful, and taught us to avoid those that are poisonous. However, if you eat large amounts of one food, you can poison yourself, even though reasonable amounts are harmless or beneficial.

Soybeans are a good example. Soybeans contain genistein, a weak estrogen that may help to prevent breast cancer. They contain omega-3 fatty acids that help prevent heart attacks, and are loaded with fiber that helps to prevent diabetes.

But soybeans contain trypsin inhibitors that block protein consumption and hemagglutinin that causes clots to form. It you take in huge amounts of soybeans, you increase your risk for pancreatic damage and even pancreatic cancer because the trypsin inhibitors block protein use and therefore make your pancreas work too hard to overcome this effect.

Huge amounts of soybeans could also make clots that can form in your heart or lungs. Soy contains goitrogens that block thyroid function. In small doses these goitrogens do not harm you, but large doses could slow your thyroid. Soybeans (and many other plants) also contain phytates, which can block the absorption of minerals. Nobody has shown that phytates in soybeans are harmful; this is a theoretical concern.

Some researchers are concerned about the widespread use of infant formula made from soybeans. We have no data yet on the consequences of feeding plant estrogens to small children. If you choose to use feed you baby soy milk, cow's milk or any formula other than breast milk, I recommend that you introduce other foods as early as possible to add variety to the diet and reduce your infant's reliance on any single food.

When you hear about the health benefits of any food, don't believe that you should start eating abnormally large amounts of that food, or eating one food to the exclusion of other foods. Huge amounts of any single food can be harmful. A healthy diet contains a WIDE variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and other seeds; and modest amounts of any other foods that you enjoy.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy is indicated for use as an adjunctive long-term treatment of chronic or recurrent depression for patients over the age of 18 who are experiencing a major depressive episode and have not had an adequate response to four or more adequate antidepressant treatments.

Where other treatments have not worked or have stopped working, VNS Therapy has been shown to provide:

  • It is not related to electroconvulsive therapy or brain surgery

  • It is a ninety minute out-patient procedure

  • A prescription from your psychiatrist is required

  • Effectiveness that improves over time and lasts long term

  • Significant and lasting improvement in vitality, emotional well-being, daily function, and social interaction

  • Side effects that are mild to moderate and typically decrease over time

  • Vagus nerve stimulation(VNS) therapy is a safe procedure which has undergone extensive clinical research over the 17 years. VNS Therapy has been studied since 1988, with the first clinical studies for chronic and recurrent depression beginning in 1998

  • The vagus nerve is one of the primary communication pathways from the major organs of the body to the brain. VNS (vagus nerve stimulation) Therapy is delivered by a pulse generator (like a pacemaker) and thin, flexible wires that send mild pulses to the vagus nerve in the left side of the neck

  • The vagus nerve delivers these pulses to the areas of the brain involved in the regulation of mood

  • VNS Therapy targets specific areas of the brain that affect the production or activity of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine

I was implanted with the vagus nerve stimulator in 2001 in the pioneering investigation trial of vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. It completely changed my life, when every other therapy had failed.

Charles Donovan was a presenter at the FDA Medical Devices Panel Meeting in Washington, D.C. He is the author of the book: Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression

Glyconutrients: Cells Talk!

Do cells really talk to each other? Apparently, they do! New research shows that they need to be in constant contact with each other in order to do the trillions of things our bodies require of them each day. These include healing wounds, making new blood cells, growing hair and nails, digesting food, regulating hormones, keeping the heart beating. The list is endless.

According to new scientific research whenever two or more cells interact carbohydrates that live on the surface level of the cells are involved. This happens without exception.

In 1996, a prominent biologist noted that eight different monosaccharide sugars were necessary for glycoform synthesis (for cells to be able to communicate with each other). Furthermore, he discovered that only two of these monosaccharides are commonly available in the standard Western diet.

Glyconutrients are nutritional supplements made from the eight monosaccharide sugars that are essential components of each cell. By taking glyconutrient supplements people can increase their inter-cellular communication. This provides an excellent way for them to improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Glyconutrients do not just play a useful role in health maintenance. Taking them can also help to enhance the effects of a balanced diet and the efficacy of dietary supplements.

The benefits of glyconutrients can be demonstrated with reference to the following case study.

A woman?s husband had been diagnosed with depression as well as high cholesterol and blood pressure. She had heard about the healing power of glyconutrients and bought them for her husband to try. Within only two weeks she noticed that his energy levels had increased significantly. Five weeks later her husband went to the doctor for blood tests and was told that his blood work was normal, for the first time in forty four years.

Scientists have always known that the body has the potential to heal itself but, until recently, the reasons were unknown. Glyconutrients are now being seen as the driving force behind this process which means that life has never tasted so sweet!

Elizabeth Harfleet is a leading a UK based nutritional therapist specialising in glyconutrients.

Several Tips to Stop Baldness

Technically known as alopecia, baldness means thinning or loss of hair as a result of illness, functional disorder, or hereditary disposition.

There could be many types of baldness, major among these are patches of baldness getting usually grow back, rapid shedding after childbirth, fever, or sudden weight loss and thinning from tight braids or ponytails. baldness can be found in males and females both, but men are more susceptible to this phenomenon. This has been attributed to male sex hormone called testosterone. Some of the other culprits causing baldness are scalp infection, oiliness or dirtiness of the scalp and hair, and excessive lacquering of hair.

Alopecia areata is yet another cause of hair loss or baldness, this dermatological disease is caused by person's own immunity attacking the hair follicles.

Hair loss is not a quick fire phenomenon. Hair loss or baldness takes a long time, unless otherwise because of chemotherapy. Not every male will experience baldness, but for sure, he will have thin hair over a period of time. Although lot of research has taken place in this area, nothing exact has been found to arrest hair loss or stop balding process. It is estimated that around 100 hairs are lost in a 24-hour cycle. This doesn't mean baldness.

For years wiser people have been discussing effect of diet on baldness. Wholesome silica, calcium & iron rich diet can reduce hair loss or arrest baldness. Studies in the past have shown that silica therapy slowed baldness. Shampoo containing organic silica was found to help prevent baldness, stimulate hair growth and assure beautiful shine, luster and strength. Outer coverings of potatoes, green & red peppers and cucumbers contain silica. Bean sprouts are also high in silica. Eat whole foods including sprouts.

Good intake of vegetables can improve your vitamin C score leading to higher iron absorption. Vitamin E is important for healthy hair growth. Eat avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil on a regular basis. If thyroid dysfunction is the cause of baldness vitamin A and iodine food can help prevent baldness. Eat vegetables such as carrots or spinach in unrefined, cold-pressed seed oils such as flax, walnut or pumpkin seed and sea salt. Take turnips, cabbage, mustard, soy beans, peanuts, pine nuts and millet if there is a deficiency of iodine. Dried fruits, green & leafy vegetables, cherry juice are good sources. Diet should avoid these - cold foods & drinks, sugary foods, fatty foods, animal protein, fruit, especially citrus, tomatoes, tofu, millet, salt and dairy products.

Gastrointestinal tract can be the culprit for female baldness. It could be a sign of insufficient stomach acids; It could also mean a deficiency of protein, zinc and other nutrients. Taking two acidophilus tablets after or between meals (four to six tablets per day) for two months will help. Females are greatly affected due to anemic conditions, leading to accelerated baldness.

Tips on How to Make the Most of Your Beauty Budget

Do you know that the 'average' woman spends about $600 a year on skin care and color cosmetics, according to the beauty industry? Whether she uses only cleansers and lotions or has an array of beauty products, shopping can be time-consuming and expensive. So, here are some quick tips on how to make the most of your beauty budget.

Part of the 'secret' is to insist on quality for those items that matter ... and the most important items are those that help you care for your skin. Look to see if the product line includes the following steps: cleansing, exfoliating, refining or toning and moisturizing. Then review the ingredients for compatability with your individual skin type and sensitivities. If you're not sure how your skin will react, ask for samples and test them on your forearm.

Quality isn't necessarily costly though you may spend a little more to find a product line that is the most effective for you. Conversely, expensive isn't necessarily the best choice. Very high-priced product lines typically contain rare substances that may or may not work for you. Unless you are already using optimum products for your skin, you should notice a difference within two weeks to a month of starting a new regime. Your skin should appear clearer, smoother and well-moisturized.

After skin care, the right foundation or powder and concealer are important beauty buys. Depending upon the amount of coverage you want, select a foundation, creme to powder foundation, dual coverage powder foundation, pressed or loose powder and concealer that blend as closely as possible with your face. (With foundation, test the shade along your jaw line to compare the color with both your face and neck; watch to see if it ?disappears? into your skin.)

Another part of the 'secret' to making the most of your beauty budget is spending less on color products that change with the seasons such as eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks. Most product lines will offer the lastest hot colors, which tend to be similar, so comparison shop. Another idea is to accumulate a palette of primary eye colors which can be mixed to create your own hot colors.

There's no need to spend too much to look your best!
